City By Design

Today we had a BLAST! Took a field trip with our co-op to the National Building Museum. First, was a visit to the LEGO exhibit. amazing. This guy has made scale models of about 12 famous buildings, mostly skyscrapers, completely out of Legos. The boys loved this (mom thought it was pretty cool too!) Here they are sketching some of the buildings:
and my personal favorite, Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright... with the site! (but no stream)Then, onto the build it yourslef area.....Even I got in on the fun. I wasnt going to pass this up! My model:Afterwards, we had lunch then headed to a workshop put on by the NBM. We were split into 2 groups by age, and then the kids got to design their own city. It was really well done! Zach was on teh "residential" team, but we had industrail, commercial, and institutional as well. These kids did such an amazing job. Especially considering they used all recycled materials... no directions or kits allowed! Pure imagination and creativity. Zach decided to make a townhouse. After some planning and discussion (consensus required) they started to lay out the city.

It was really an amazing group effort. So much fun. And weird for the "former/current?? architect" to be back in my old stomping grounds. It was so much fun and it was one of those many days when I am so happy and grateful to be a homeschooler!
