We had a great time visiting our county fair last week. Usually, we bring a scavenger hunt, which helps keep the kids interested in all the good things there, and not just wanting to go straight for the rides! We really did have a great day there. Here is Cori on a tractor, an you can see the camel rides in the background.
Zach wasnt interested in the poodle show (I couldnt get Cori away from it) so he occupied himself building a tower. Funny side note: they had a big bin filled with soybeans as a "ball pit". Ty and Z loved it and rolled around for about 15 minutes. Once he was out, Zach announced he had a soybean stuck in his ear! And boy do i mean stuck! He had been poking at it, so he pushed it WAY UP inside his ear canal. Fighting my urge to panic, i opted not to take him to the first aid station and instead tried the good 'ol mom method of wacking him on the side on the head a few times. After about 5 minutes it loosened up enough to work its way out a little so i could reach it and get it out... very..... gently! Thankful for no trip to the ER!
They earned free ice cream from summer reaing lists. One scoop each. Except the girls at the counter were feeling generous so Zach got a bowl with about 10 scoops of ice cream. I'm not exaggerating! He was beside himself and tried to eat about 1/3 of it before giving up. Wish i had a photo of that, but i was managing 4 ice cream cones in 90 degree heat and trying to keep everyones from falling on the ground. No hands for photos!
Ok, this was funny! I let each kids pick 2 rides and Tyler wanted the upside-down -vortex-of -death. Mom said no (big shocker). so we opted for this ride instead that went fast, forwards and backwards. He loved it! After getting off he yelled, "That ROCKED!" and made all the dudes who worked there laugh. I did manage to get a photo of that one.
Sweet C on the merry-go-round.
This was interesting, because the merry-go-round was directly across from the Haunted House.
The County Fair can be a combo of fun and torture for a special-needs kid. All the loud sounds, music, crowds, heat, etc... ok, and thats just for us parents! But add a scary Freddy Krueger jumping out with bat noises, spooky music and screams, and its a recipe for disaster. But Z did ok with it. He was terrified, and refused to walk past it, but was able to tell me why. I found a bench for him to sit on, back facing the HH, and he closed his eyes and stuck his fingers in his ears. He sat there like that the entire time the rest of us rode the Merry-go-round. He was right on the other side of the fence from the ride and i couldve touched him. But it was a great coping strategy for him and we were still able to let Cori ride. In the past, I wouldve had to skip it alltogether being there by myself. He did a great job with it!
