Our First Day of School

Thankfully, it was a great first day! I realized afterwards I took 55 photos, so I promise to edit here. But we did have alot of fun. The night before was a little "hairy" - Z was very nervous, anxious and stressed about starting school again. Here I was thinking, " we homeschool, what are you worried about?" but then remembered my child, who he is, and why this is still a struggle for him. I knew it wasnt about me, but it was just a transition that was uncertain. So, how did I snap him out of it? Well, on a whim I showed him my planner. I didnt think he'd have any interest, but after seeing the plan not only for the week, but for the overall year (not in detail!) he was much more relaxed, and even excited! Crisis #1 solved. Only 1,000,0032 left to go.....

Here is Ty's work area (above) with his workboxes ready to go...

This was Zach's area, with his new "Stoplight folder"... a carryover tool from camp this summer.

And i also set out just a few items for Cori to work on that i knew she would be interested in.

SO, in the morning I knew the boys alarm was set to go off. Cori was first up, as usual. Ty made his way downstairs at about 7:30. At about 7:40 I'm wondering where Zach is and if he is awake yet? So, when i go to check on him this is what I find:

Ah, it warms a mothers heart! A boy dressed, bed made, reading his Bible and ready to go! (BTW- this is a first for him!)

After breakfast, Ty wanted to get started on a puzzle (?) so since we had plenty of time, it was fine! As a matter of fact, we were ready early and I wanted to get some wigglies out so we took a quick bike ride about the neighborhood. I think was about at 8:45am?

Cori pushing her stroller.

After our litte ride/walk, I had planned a scavenger hunt. It wasnt a big deal, just a few clues to send them around to different locations in/out of the house. They thought it was a blast!

clue #1(Zach had been saving his new Angry Birds shirt for the occasion!)

more clues at the keyboard.....

Finally, clue # 6, a map to the yard..... followed by the "treasure" which was basically candy and new fun books. What a treat! Then we took some photos and got to work....

Ty checking out his new Math stuff. (multiple digits... ooooooh!)

Cori had some sticker books.

We set up our "All About Spelling" Board. And lots of other things reviewed on our first day. It was pretty much a "get back into the routine" kind of day. And, after all the work was done we had stacks of "completed" boxes.....

And then we celebrated by walking to the park!

Way to go, kiddos! Even mom was standing (and still smiling) at the end of Day 1. I even asked Ty to take a picture of me with my phone, but since he sort of cut off my head in the photo I decied not to post it..... maybe next year :-)

  1. What a great way to start the year! It makes me wish my guys were young again. It sounds like you had an exciting start. May the Lord grant you grace each day as you teach and care for your family. I am all inspired now and ready to do something fun with my kids.

    We miss you all!
