Tonight my husband and I got together with the boys, as we try to do every Sunday night for what we call "Family Time". We've been discussing Christmas and Jesus' birthday, so tonight we talked a little bit more about the Christmas story, which they are both very familiar with, and then asked them just in casual conversation if they had any questions about it. I had to contain my laughter at times. It went a little something like this:
Dad: So do you guys have any questions about it?
Ty: Yes I want to pray that everyone would have a good week
Me: ok Ty, that will be during our prayer time, but what about questions? do either of you have questions?
Z: Yeah, um, why was Jesus in a manger?
Dad: why? where else would he be?
Z: on the back of a cow
Dad: Why would he be on the back of a cow?
Z: because its a cool place to take a picture.
Dad: well you're right, that would be cool,....... but ya know.....
Z: yeah, I know, I know, cameras weren't invented yet
Dad: but you're right, that would have been cool to take a picture of baby Jesus on the back of a cow. but why wasn't Jesus born like in a castle?
Me: in a golden crib with fluffy pillows?
boys: we don't know????
Dad: well because God wanted to show he was humble, and not proud. He came for rich and poor people
Ty: for all people!!
Dad: right
Me: so why did the angles announce Jesus was born to shepherds and not to the priests?
*quiet.. gears turning*
Z: because he played eeny meeny miney mo and the shepherds won!
Dad: so you think God thought, "hmmm who should I go to... priests? or shepherds? priests?... shepherds?
Z: yeah! and the shepherds won!
(talk about why God picked shepherds)
Z: I have another question. why was Jesus in bethlehem? I thought he was from Nazareth?
Me: good question. (go on to explain the Romas census and how Joseph had to go to city of birth)
Dad: so if this happened to our family, we'd have to go to Blacksburg
Z: right, and if it happens to me then I have to come back to Gaithersburg!
Me: ok, what about the wise men?
Ty: there were 3 of them!
Dad: why 3? how do you know there were 3?does the Bible say 3?

Me: oh.
Z: they followed a star!
Dad: a special star.. that moved!
Z: yeah.... no fair. Ive never even seen a shooting star yet.
