It is always a challenge to get my kids to expand their taste buds and try new foods. In addition, getting them to eat and ENJOY things that are green is even harder. Our rule is: "try a little bit of everything on your plate" and I try not to serve things that would be terribly challenging for toddlers (like brussel sprouts, which are hard for me too!)
My husband and I have been "eating" alot of shakes recently, so I decided to make one for the kids too. It was a jackpot! Not only did they slurp it up, but I managed to get all kinds of fruit (which is usually easy) AND VEGETABLES! into this smoothie. Can anyone say... frozen spinach? My boys have never eating so much green in one sitting, and are not even aware of it!
Here is a photo of Tyler.. slurping away!
Here is my recipe. I've modified it a few times since this initial test:
1 handful of frozen spinach (i used organic)
1 bag of frozen strawberries
1 jar of Dole pineapple (this is what really masks the spinach taste)
12 oz of vanilla yogurt
about 1/2 c of pomegranate juice
It was so yummy!
So when I poured it into cups, i just KNEW that Tyler would see the green flecks and reject the drink. So, using a fun (and somewhat opaque) cup and a straw are what sealed this as a success.
Bon Appetite!!
