Extended Christmas

I never have liked that Christmas only lasts one day. With all the build up, its a shame to have it be over so soon. Well, it wasn't like that this year in our house! We got to celebrate Christmas for about 2 1/2 weeks straight. We hosted my mother-in-law, then sisters-in-law and their families, followed by a day trip out to Will's Dads place in The Plains, VA. Then, one of Will's sisters came back to spend New Year's Eve with us. My cousin stopped by for a visit as he and his family drove North up the East Coast, and we topped it all off with some friends at our house on Friday. Whew! Its been busy around here, but fun!

Here is one photo of Grandma being smothered. I think she loved every minute!

The whole gift thing was our biggest challenge this year with Zach. We spent many times prior to Christmas talking about gifts, why we give them, why its nicer to give than receive.. blah blah blah. in one ear and out the other Im afraid. We practiced what to say when you receive a gift, (THANK YOU!!!!!) what to say when you receive a gift you already have (thank you.) and what to say when you receive a gift you really dont care for (thank you for thinking of me?). All making some attenpt at eye contact. Despite our successful trial runs, the game day proved to be missing the same success of practice runs.

Here is a photo of Z inspecting the presents..... you can hear the gears turning to see which ones are for him!

So, we experienced many "teaching moments" of reminding Z of an appropriate response (in front of the giver) and having quite a few "Do-overs" to practice good manners. Not sure if it was successful at all, but I have to hope it will one day stick. It was hard to overcome my embarrassment at times, especially seeing family members get feelings hurt. But, everyone was gracious and understanding toward him. To him, its so "black and white".. like "Why should I say thanks when I dont like it?" and "Im over that toy, don't you understand?" or better yet, "Awww another BOOK! I have millions of books already!"
YIKES.
