Three Cheers for Penpals!

I would have never guessed that having a penpal would be such a great thing! All I can say now is.... why didnt I do this a long time ago?

It started one day when Zach really got into writing small letters, more like quick notes really, to me and to his brother. Since writing is often a MAJOR BATTLE, I welcomed the idea. But, alas notes to mom and brother proved pretty predicable (boring) after a few short exchanges. Here is one example:

Zach: Mom, Can I play Wii?

Mom: No, please finish your math. XOXO

Next, he was challenged in CSB (Christian Service brigade... sort of like Boy Scouts) as one of his activites to have a penpal. So started our journey.

So, how to find your son a penpal when we dont know any kids out of state? He nixed neighbors right away. "he has to live faaaar away, and no girls" was his request. So, where does a mom turn to find her son a penpal? The internet of course! Went to a Yahoo group for our HS curriculum, Tapestry of Grace, and basically sent a "ISO: penpal for 9 yr old boy" e-mail. Literally, within minutes I had 10 replies. I had to send a "Please stop, position has been filled" type of reply! So, not only did I find a penpal for Zach, but ended up connecting 5 other families with each other. (I HAD to play social networker since I DID sent out the request!)

The result? a boy who now will sit and write AN ENTIRE PAGE.. sometimes even 2! And the best part? NO COMPLAINING! Even better.... he self-corrects his own puncuation and capitol letters, which has also been an ongoing battle. You can see here below, his neatly written letter, reference materials (i.e. Pokemon cards) and envelope ready to address.

A miracle! Just goes to show what a little motivation (and + peer pressure) will do!! Thank you, Jonathan in MA!!
